    Q. How to detect/neutralize toxins in stones cut with petroleum-lubricated saws?

Don't feel bad, but no, this does not help in any way, lol. I don't need to know if they might be fine, but if they are fine. A small amount of chemicals or metals can kill an entire tank.

    Q. How to detect/neutralize toxins in stones cut with petroleum-lubricated saws?

I’ll narrow my request to the following info: 1. Specific tests, by name — kits or other home methods; 2. ...that test water only with no fish (not on live fish to see if they die); 3. ...for substances known to be toxic to freshwater fish or aquatic plants; 4. in a] rocks and minerals in...

    Hallelujah for Krylon

I should add that Krylon got back to me and could not vouch for its safety "in" aquariums. I am double checking my sources who confirm it is as safe as any food rated product, but as I remember, Krylon could not do the extensive testing so are playing it safe.

    Hallelujah for Krylon

Happy to discover Krylon tonight. My new Marineland Bio-Wheel Penguin Power Filter arrived, looking as ugly as a hunk of plastic could possibly look. Now I just have to decide -- Do I paint it matte white, gloss white, blue, or Jungle Green? I may also seal the submerged part. I'll also paint...

Yippee! 29 gal tank arrives today; substrate suggestions welcome

Ha! L’Hotel! It will be submerged 1.5" and vacuum filled as an above-tank fish hideaway. Extended ~ 1.5"-2.0" through the top windows will be clear poly for waterfalls on both sides. Tiny black acrylic grand piano suspended from the glass ceiling with a suction cup and fish line. Scales...

Yippee! 29 gal tank arrives today; substrate suggestions welcome

What I mean to say is, I'm basing the amount of fish I get on how much actual water will be in my tank, not total tank size. Jim at Imperial Tropicals gave me a nice starter fish list. I will map it out for temp comoatibility and other factors. I will not be breeding right away, but guppies...

Yippee! 29 gal tank arrives today; substrate suggestions welcome

Hi, yes. I plan to have fish, 24 gallons worth. My main substrate, unless I get a better idea, is the Seachem (which will be thoroughly rinsed). The glass will form a relatively thin layer … I’m not firm on this color or size — and it too will be very well rinsed. The Seachem, at, say, 1.5"...

Fishless cycling question (stalled?) from brand new hobbyist

Benny, What source or guide or article are you using as your model for fishless cycling? This is one I have been studying; it seems to be well trusted here. It's easier to advise you when people know what instructions you are following. Look for others at SprucePets...

What order do I add fish?

According to LiveAquaria, here are the total lengths in inches of each fish on your list, individually and as a group; when shipped (juvenile) and when full grown (max). I realize some fish are shipped in quantities, and you may not plan to end up with this many total. Also, note that LA's...

What order do I add fish?

Read up on the guides at Live Aquaria. Exteremely useful, tips you will not generally find here. Below are highlights I remember: Be ready to introduce the dominant fish first, to help establish territoriality. Open boxes of new fish in the dark. Lights off, they stress fish. And quiet, and...

    Filtration

MissPriss, You're asking good questions. One thing to be aware of is: there are an infinity of combinations of equipment, media, fish, and general practices to choose from. Many of them work. When narrowing down a system, you may be overwhelmed and distracted by these combinations. It can even...

    Q. How to detect/neutralize toxins in stones cut with petroleum-lubricated saws?

TOXIN TEST: What toxin test would you perform to make sure these rocks/stones are safe? I am considering using a few colorful fish-safe Jasper, agate, and Amethyst stones in my hardscape. I will double verify each stone type. HOWEVER, in the cutting process, a petroleum-based Ultra Utility...

Yippee! 29 gal tank arrives today; substrate suggestions welcome

Standard 29 gal Aqueon. After earth and air, there will be closer to 24.5 gal. actual water in the tank. Q. Does This Look Okay: I’m leaning towards Seachem Fluorite Back Sand, as it seems to be universally praised. I found smooth crushed polished glass as gravel, in transparent aquatic...

    I am new here

What I did with my first list of fish to buy, and others, is put them in a Word or Excel grid or table, and give each of them a column for temp range, PH, all the may many things you need to know and plan for. At some point you may notice that their temperature ranges all align (or do not), or...

Hi, fish friends, this is turning into LOADS of fun! As a beginner speaking to beginners, I advise strongly that VOLUME, and Illusory VOLUME PERCEPTION, is something you must check out now, early, while thinking about a tank capacity and fish, and while learning how to build, cycle, populate a...

“Calculate” Fish Capacity (vs Total Tank - Earth/Air/Fish Tank Cap.

I am pondering how substrate and fill levels (Earth & Air) will displace water as I plan a custom tank order. I want a solid idea of what I really have to work with, so fish:water ratio is optimum. I like math, and Excel, so I created an EZ-fill worksheet (happy to share if you like). I would...

To set custom tank L / W / H for gallons, do you add substrate volume to gallons?

Yes, I have been thinking about that as I plan a custom tank order. I like math, and Excel, so I'm creating some EZ-fill worksheets to share. An explanatory thread is coming for the attached picture of one of the EZ-sheets.

To set custom tank L / W / H for gallons, do you add substrate volume to gallons?

I’m curious how people set the dimensions of a custom tank to get to their desired gallons. If I knew I wanted a minimum of, say, 5 gallons, or 1,155 cubic in. a perfect cube of 10.5" L and W and H, and intended to add 2" of substrate and leave 1.5" of space from water level to brim, I would...
