    Reef PVC structure

Thats cool. I like that you drilled holes in it. I hope that it doesn't act like a trap ~ things go in but can't get out. I always used "egg crate" ya know that white plastic grid material. I used PVC pipe with big holes as the legs.

    diy canister/sump troubles

If you don’t want to drill your tank you should definitely go with a “siphon overflow”. I usually go with 1 size larger than designated for your flow rate (gph your pump puts out). That way if you ever upgrade to a larger pump you’re covered. I forget where I bought mine but I would check...

    diy canister/sump troubles

If you don’t already have a canister filter you would save quite a bit of money and maintenance costs by making your own. It’s very simple. Check out http://randystacye.com/diy_canister_filter.htm Anyway whether you have a sump or not you will require a pump to drive water through the canister...

    My strange filter idea...

I would just buy a Maxijet or an oscillating power head. I doubt that raising a small filter would achieve much of anything. Increasing the flow however would. Surge devices are however are the most practical way of creating a "surge" without increasing the flow. There are many ways to create...

    what type of safe/paint?

Try www.sanitred.com I know that they offer what is called a "Mini Sample Pack” for $24.95 I don’t know if that’s too pricy for this project, but I do know that it will work and last forever. Their coatings are a type of polyurethane and cure tough as a truck tire. They are fish safe. The...

    Lock down!

One sure way to lock the hood down would be to drill a hole on the side (or both sides) of the hood. Where you drill should go through the outer part of the hood into the “swing up lid”. Cut an appropriate length of doll rod which is of the appropriate diameter as well. There are many real...

    Gen X Submersible GX1000 Pump

I have a few tanks of different sizes in need of some serious skimming. Thinking about constructing some skimmers. Tanks between 55-75 gal. Anyone had much experience with this pump? Think it would do a good job? I have never witnessed one and have no clue what the needle wheel looks like. Can’t...

    DIY - ~2000 gal aquarium?

I was trying to find a “fiberglass tub” of some sort to create a coral propagation tank. I called all fiberglass fabricators in a large radius of where I live and none of them would let one go for under $200.00 and only some of them would hold about 100 gal if that. Next I began visiting these...

    cutting slate

I would go to a local equipment rental and rent their "wet diamond blade saw". As jsoong mentioned, it will only cut straight lines, so make as many straight cuts as you can to make your basic shape. After that just take an angle grinder to shape the radius.

    DIY - ~2000 gal aquarium?

It would be best to construct this 2000 gal tank out of poured concrete including rebar. It could be constructed out of concrete block, but block is not as “quality” compared to poured concrete though there is absolutely no reason why it would not work. I would prefer to fill the blocks with...

    Euro Reef Dimensions?

I am going to build a DIY skimmer and am starting with the basics. I have become in love with the Needle type skimmers - especially the Euro Reef. I was wondering if anyone out there could give a little input with the dimensions/measurements of these skimmers. I would like to build an equivalent...

    The Best DIY Venturi

I just found this excellent DIY Venturi! “Don W” from Reef Frontiers originally posted his made from acrylic rod. I couldn’t find acrylic rod so I made mine out of PVC filled with a 2-part material from www.sanitred.com called Quick Patch. I simply mixed it, poured it into a piece of ¾” PVC and...

Did I miss something, 2x4 question

The easiest way to create a soundproof box is exactly like you were saying (like a stud wall) then instead of using typical insulation, etc... you should use SAND. Everyone has heard of Winchester (the gun manufacturer). Well they soundproofed the entire Winchester Mansion this way because it...

    The Ultimate DIY Skimmer INFO

I am proposing that anyone who wants to make a kick ass Euro-Reef, ASM/Euro-Reef Clone, Deltec, etc… SKIMMER should help to make a list of the pumps and impellers needed. This will not be fun to do but it will help ourselves and the many others who don’t want to pay $250.00 - $500.00 for a...
