The 300 gallon outside corner reef of 32 years has been moved to its new 400 gallon P

It was exhausting for a 71 year old guy to pull of building our new home AND move 25 year old fish. It is a story I will tell in more detail soon. The 400 gallon peninsula tank Planet built for me has all the latest features. Moving from acrylic to low iron glass has been a positive experience.

Food is food, it's how we feed

I have for years gone by the assumption that frozen food was better than even high quality flake food. Rinsing the frozen food discarded inedible juices that would just turn to phosphates made good sense. Time and time again, we recommend to folks with algae outbreaks to knock off the flake...

    How fat is your fish?

Topic: is it possible to have fish that are too fat? My tangs are known for their thickness. If I didn't love them I would say they are about right for breading and a frying pan. My general theory is that a well fed (surgeonfish in this case) is a happy, calm and healthy fish. Is your fish...

Are we driving our corals past their light saturation capability?

An interesting and complex read; Feature Article: How Much Light?! Analyses of Selected Shallow Water Invertebrates' Light Requirements — Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog It makes a point about how little PAR SPS corals actually need. This jives with my personal observations...

    Anyone raise Pectinia?

Just got a beautiful specimen in. Have it under full spectrum LED at about 350 PAR. Modest circulation, anyone have any suggestions on this coral?

    Mysterious predator

We have a Neuvo 38 gallon reef setup at my office. Very limited live stock, will list below. We have a two week old, eating, cherub angelfish about 3/4" long. This angel is now exhibiting torn fins and has a hole under his right eye that looks like its going into his mouth. He still eats. Any...

    Made my own Aptaisia X

At $15 a bottle or more, I decided to try and reverse engineer this stuff. Joes Juice is also similar. The basic ingredient is kalkwasser powder, or plain old lime. I use a shot glass to mix it. About a teaspoon of kalkwasser powder. Add about a half a teaspoon of corn starch. Add RO/DI water...

It's time to play Name That Fish!

I was a underwater photographer in another earlier life. I have shots of wild fish and maybe later on, some corals that I will post. The winner receives the coveted "No Prize." These are all adult fish. First one is easy:

Hawaii tries again to stop collection and sale of fish for the aquarium indus... You need to read this and look closely at the ammunition they are using to try to stop the export of many if not all Hawaiian fish. New bill threatens to ban commercial reef fish harvest in Hawaii – updated I...

Irregularly sized aquariums, does it reduce stress?

For years I have watched my fish interact in my outside corner reef. A fish can be on one side of the reef and not see the fish on the other end. It has created a quiet zone where less bold fish can swim to and get out of a fray. I am thinking this ability to stay out of constant sight is a good...

    Tangs and diet

It occures to me when I see most tangs, especially yellow ones, they are paper thin. I have found we aren't feeding them enough. A few years ago I started a program to beef my tangs up. They are all now quite fat and seem very happy. But it took far more food than I would have imagined to get...

I am rescuing a friends tank that has been very healthy, until now

Her tank has broken out in velvet. She added a couple of gobies that seem to have set it off. Moving the fish to a 40 gallon quarantine with copper. Anything else I should do?

    Media tumbling

This thread is intended to discuss media tumbling. I use to run a fluidized sand filter on my reef. I liked the whole concept of fluidization. Didn't seem efficient to place things like GFO in a bag and in the sump. In a reactor my GFO turned too hard to pass water thru it within days because of...

Why does anyone want a light that does lightening?

I guess I don't get it. Why would you flash the LED lights to make it look like lightening? It scares the heck out of the fish. And as a diver, I have seen lightening underwater. It doesn't look like this. Cloud passage over a big tank might look cool, but an effect that causes fish to jump is...

    I've had it with GFO

I know, I know, it's a great phosphate remover. And it's fairly cheap and available everywhere. But it is a freaking mess. Stains everything it touches, clumps up if calcium is high in days and can't be effectively tumbled. At least I cant get it to work for any length of time. It either clumps...

    I am over Tanked

The last episode of Tanked put me over the top. I'm sure the folks at ATM are really nice but, this show is a bad example for our hobby. They use fish like glitter on a birthday card. Their theme tanks, especially the outdoor ones are nothing but fish killers IMO. Many look impossible to...

    Hanna test kits

One of the best investments I have made in the last couple of years has to be purchasing the Hanna test kits. I don't test compulsively, but my system is operating at maximum coral load, so keeping an eye on things seemed prudent. I bought almost all of them except the Ph kit, my reef controller...

    House of clams

I am enjoying raising my first clams after decades of reef keeping. My frag tanks host them as my main reef has too many fish that pester clams. I have a 4" Squamosa that is doing great, but made the mistake of buying a tiny maxima and obviously didn't feed it successfully. I will buy a bigger...

    Hard red algae killing zoas.

Had a huge colony of common zoas that got infected with a algae that looks like Cyano, but is very hard and difficult to remove. It slowly chokes out the zoas. I finally did a hydrogen peroxide dip that killed the algae in seconds. Now the zoas are recovering. But I am curious as to what this...
