    Complete Rescape - stocking ideas?

I rescaped my 36 gallon bowfront after moving the neons that were there into my 29 gallon planted RCS tank. So besides a few RCS, it’s empty of stock. Any ideas? My thoughts are some Cories, rummy nose tetras, danios, and a centerpiece fish of some sort. Other thoughts are several pea puffers...

    FishyMamma’s 36gal. raffle build

Hey all, I won the raffle at today’s aquarium goods auction! So now I have a 36gal. to set up, too! Fortunately it comes complete with everything but the fish. So I’ll have it up and running soon.

    Plant ID

I’m at an Aquarium Auction and got a big bag of this for $9. Looks like it could float or be planted. What the heck is it? :)

Crazy idea for my new 130gallon

I have a new-to-me 130gallon tank. It needs everything so it’s a little expensive right now. I’m thinking I could save money and still provide plants for my future fishies by not putting in any substrate. If I put in driftwood, Marino (sp.?) balls, and lots of pothos anchored underneath, as...

    Pregnant or sick?

This is the last of three Julii Cories I introduced to my 30gal. aquarium a coupe of months ago. I’ve been planning on getting him/her some friends since but haven’t made the trip. I know they should be in groups of 5-6 minimum. I never figured out why the other Cories didn’t make it. I...

Is this enough filtration for 130gallons?

I got a Marineland C530 canister filter second hand for $75. According to Amazon, it has enough filtration: “100 to 150-Gallon/530 GPH”. But aqadvisor says it’s not for enough for much at all. I think I’ve heard one should get double the filtration the labels say. Is this accurate.

    FishyMamma’s 130g tank build

I got this tank from a children’s museum that was closing. It came with the stand only. I need to get the remaining gravel and walls cleaned out. Fortunately it was used for freshwater so it shouldn’t be too onerous a job. I’m planning on a planted tank with black sand. I may have a some...

    Cichlid Substrates

Is there a reason most cichlids tanks seem to have gravel substrate and be decorated with rocks? I understand they need caves for hiding with their young, but can that be done with lots of wood and greenery, also? I’m totally new to cichlids.

Cichlids in a planted tank w/ community fish

Hi all. I have recently discovered the beauty of the Electric Blue Rams and would love to put them in my new tank. As I am new to cichlids, I have a few questions. I obtained a 118 gal fw tank with stand for free from a museum which was closing down. It’s six feet wide. I was wondering if...

    Silly or sick Corydora?

One of my new Julli Corydoras is acting strange. It’s one of three in a long-time cycled, 25 gallon, planted tank - shared with a disinterested male Betta. I’ve had these Jullies for about a week. They are a swimming well and seem happy. One sometimes lets herself drift down from the surface...

    Do shrimp need filters?

I have an empty traditional goldfish bowl. I'd like to aquascape it and put in RCS only. Would it need a filter? do I just do small water changes with dechlorinated water?

Scored a free huge tank. Is stocking different now?

Hi all, I will be picking up a free, new-to-me, 150 gal. aquarium with stand and light (possibly more). A children's museum is remodeling and it must go on the 30th of July. [emoji16] I'm a moderately experienced fish keeper and have had several tanks in different sizes, but never one bigger...

Can a betta tank be too big?

So I have a 55 gallon cycled and heavily planted tank with 5 long fin gold danios and three neon tetras. Oh, and three Nerite snails. I am moving a few hours away next summer and don't want to have to move a lot of fish, I am thinking of adding a male betta. I haven't had good luck with...

This is what happens when you don't temperature match...

Got pulled away from the sink as I was setting up the water changer to fill my tank. I thought I had checked the water temperature long enough before leaving it. I had not. The tank's water temperature had dropped 10° before I noticed. I lost most of my fish. Interestingly, the longfin gold...

    Fin-rot, Bettas, and chain stores

Good morning all, I have tried several times to keep Berta's but they all get terrible fin-rot, or never shake what they come infected with. I house them in heavily planted 15 gal tanks with no other fish. I do twice weekly water changes. The tanks have always been properly cycled and the...

Water bubbles - a bad thing?

I heard/read one time only that when refilling our tanks we should make sure it's not filled with so many little bubbles that the fish have them all over themselves. Causes some sort of damage. Is this real and what sort of harm would they cause?

    When to leave fish be?

Hi all, I have three remaining neon tetras in my 55 gal. community tank. The rest are in a 19 gal. with my red cherry shrimp. (Trying out this set-up.) I can't seem to catch the three and I don't want more in that tank I am doing other fish with that tank. Will they suffer being only three...

    Attempting the inadvisable

I have a 25/30 gal. (Not sure which) planted tank with a Betta in it. I want to try shrimp in it also. I have areas for them to hide from Chester, the Betta, such as a tunnel, Catappa leaf litter, moss balls, and a few types of mosses. I just got 15 RCS in the mail today from an AquaBid...

    Bloody eyes and red dots

Please help if you can. I have a 35 gallon, heavily planted, with four Edlers and two small angelfish (hoping to breed them). The striped angel has bloody eyes: And the koi angel has red dots on top of her body. Water parameters are perfect: 0ppm Ammonia, 0ppm Nitrites, 10ppm Nitrates...

    30gal Dream Betta Build

Hi all! I'm building my dream Betta tank. I have a new-to-me 30 gallon tank. (See below) The filter media is already seeded so I will be able to add a Betta as soon as I get the tank ready. As you can see from the pic above, there are already some floating plants inside because I moved a...

    Let's talk breakdowns

I'm an intermediate fish-keeper - meaning I've made all the basic mistakes and learned from them. Now I rarely lose a fish, have a BB population crash, or get new tank syndrome from overzealous filter cleaning. However, I notice after about a year of aquarium life, my tank starts to feel...

    Are Glo-fish sterile?

Yes, my son took a walk on the evil side and bought Glo-fish Tetras. I doubt he knows about the controversy and now that he has them and is excited for them, I'm not burdening him with it. I don't want to put him off fishkeeping as he's just getting started. So I'm wondering if these guys are...

I have three baby angels in a 29 gal. planted aquarium. Two are hanging out together and chasing away a third. Can they be paired THIS small (1/2 dollar size)? See pic. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    The colors in angelfish

I bought five quarter-sized angelfish yesterday at my LFS's Black Friday Sale (25% off!). I seems that several of them are showing strong black striping now that didn't in the store. Do these colors coming out mean they are less stressed than they were in the store... Or perhaps MORE stressed...
