There are color differences in wild rams but since you are not working with wild fish, you need to use their physical appearance. Look at the Dorsal ( top) fin. Starting at the head, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ray will be more noticeably elongated than the rest in a male. Females will have just a slight difference in ray length. If your fish are young, it will take some time before these traits will show themselves.
