    Well water

If the farms use fertilizers, that's where it could be coming from. The thing to understand is that contaminants don't go straight down into the soil, they follow the flow of the water so in the case of Florida, farms in Central Florida were contaminating the water in South Florida because...

    Fin Biting or Fin Rot?

If that's the case, it could be that the medicine wasn't present at a proper strength to work properly. I would check the water parameters again and if necessary, get them back to where they were when the med worked then retreat and follow the directions fully before switching to another one...

    Fin Biting or Fin Rot?

Your dosing 6 days apart doesn't sound right. Did you follow the directions exactly on the medicine? With any antibiotic, if you don't follow the directions, the bacteria can build a resistance to it. Let's start there.

    Well water

I believe that converts to 3.42 ppm so that is low and okay for your fish HOWEVER, my concern would be why is there nitrates in my well water? Where is it coming from? Is it coming from farmland up the road? ( This was a big problem in Florida that ended up polluting the Everglades and then the...

    Sand

I can't speak for the API quick start but I have used Fritzyme #9 for starting saltwater tanks with great success. ( I hear a lot of failures with using some of the other products. ) As for adding fish immediately, no matter what "starter" you use, you still need to add fish slowly and...

Do I need fake plants for my guppies to hide in?

If you want the females to release their fry, they need a protected area to do this so plants are the easiest choice. If you have just fry in the tank, they will need places to hide to feel secure so plants are the easiest things to use. When it comes to fish, the more secure they are, the more...

    Oscar books

Sadly, I only had the original TFH book on Oscars. Most of my knowledge came from first hand experience and my Mentor. I suggest going to places like Ebay or Amazon or Abbe Books or Barns and Nobel and look for book reviews on what they have to offer to see if one stands out. :thumb:

Massive overnight die off in African Cichlid tank

I should have clarified, too many information sources. I'm sure you've heard of the quote" Too many cooks spoil the broth." well that goes for fish keeping as well. I've watched ( and stopped watching btw) many "online experts" and found many of them to give information that does not apply...

That's because you asked a lot of questions that didn't have one single answer. ;)

Massive overnight die off in African Cichlid tank

The reality of large water changes is it's like playing Russian Roulette. It works when the water parameters of the tank water and the new water are close to each other but can be a disaster when they are too different. You won't know by looking at the water whether the parameters are close or...

    Well water

Age of the well has nothing to do with the quality of the water. My well water is different from my next door neighbor's well water because I have a deep well and he has a shallow well. My well water is fine out of the tap while his has to be oxygenated before it goes into the fish ponds or the...

White raised bumps on one fish

For what it's worth, the " fix" medications ( Primafix, Melafix, etc) do not really do much for treating the fish. They may have some preventative value but truthfully, they do not do much. Since you are limited in using antibiotics, salt baths are going to be your best option to help kill off...

Massive overnight die off in African Cichlid tank

It's not likely for fish to get electrocuted unless they actually touch the metal inside the heater. Fish aren't grounded so there would need to be an intense electrical current that would have shocked you when you touched the tank for them to be electrocuted. So you can discount that. If the 5...

Massive overnight die off in African Cichlid tank

If you can eliminate not using the water conditioner or that the conditioner wasn't expired, all your symptoms point towards the problem being the food. It may have been contaminated. I had a similar issue with some pleco food. The fish had eaten the same food for some time but the day after I...

    75 Gallon stocking Advice

Yeah, I looked it up on G Maps and saw there are a number of stores on that side of 8. I just never had a reason to go that way. My family is near Kemah now but lived in Houston proper before so coming from Florida, the Southwest side of all the circles ( 8, I-610, 99 ) was not really " on the...

    75 Gallon stocking Advice

Okay, I missed that one. :( Coming from AZ, I take the NE side of the circle (8) off of 290 to get to I-10 towards FL. or my cousin. I did look at some stores that had marine fish. I believe I was at Houston Aquatics, The Fish Bowl, FJW aquarium and All About Fish. Nice stores if I recall...

    75 Gallon stocking Advice

Unlike the old days, ( I was there for them ;) ) it's becoming more important to quarantine new arrivals as there have been new viruses and parasites that have developed in fish farms and have become medicine resistant. Many fish have internal issues that don't show up until the fish is stressed...

    75 Gallon stocking Advice

I'd skip the clown loaches. They prefer water parameters that are the opposite of the cichlids. They are also very prone to Ick which can take over the whole tank.

    75 Gallon stocking Advice

Here's a video that might help you decide. It has information, species suggestions, proper care tips and species info. If you have the standard 4' long 75 gallon ( which I believe you do based on the oscar tank pic), I would suggest Mbunas over Peacocks. Peacocks would be better in larger tanks.

What do I feed guppy fry?

If he doesn't have any issues during that 30 days, you can add him to the 40. If he has any issues during that 30 days, the 30 days starts again from the time the issue is resolved.
